Thursday April 17, 2008

Woke up this morning and it was still raining. Got all my stock market numbers and published my nightly stock e-mail. For breakfast I ate two double chocolate muffins. The weather channel here said that the rain would be ending shortly after lunch so we decided we would go downtown after lunch and walk and check out the shops in town.

I had leftover fish and chips from last night for lunch. The rain did end after lunch and Nancy, Karen and I drove downtown to do our daily walk. I saw yesterday in the news that the US dollar had lost ground again and
when we cashed in some traveler checks today we got the lowest exchange rate since we have been here.

After that we walked to The Jade Factory ( www.jadefactory.com ). I purchased a nice lashed hook ( shown below ) in jade. Karen got a nice pair of jade earrings, also in a fish hook style, that match the color of her jade necklace that I got her for our anniversary last year.

At The Jade Factory they had a huge piece of jade that weighed 3 tons. They said it was worth $1.5 MM NZD.

After shopping for jade we walked around for a while, looking at the various shops, and came across a donut shop. They sold 10 donuts for $2 and they didn't make them until you ordered them. They were small, no more than 2 inches in diameter and they poured a sugar/cinnamon mixture over them once they put them in the bag. They were very good.

After eating my donuts I remembered that the batteries in my glucose meter needed changing so we went to a jewelers to see if they had the battery type I needed. Turned out they had 50 of them because somebody had ordered 50 and then failed to come get them. I told them I just needed 2. The fellow said he would make me a deal on all 50 of them but I just laughed at his offer.

As we were walking to the butcher shop to get some pork cubed steaks, so Karen could make Chicken Fried Steak, which Nancy has never eaten, Nancy got a call from her daughter Abby asking her to stop at the Chinese Takeaway and get some fried rice to bring home. We were only a block away at the time so decided to go there first. We decided that we would have the Chicken Fried Steaks on Saturday night since Nancy has a neighbor's birthday party to go to tomorrow evening so Nancy got an order of Beef Chow Mein and I got an order of Chicken Satay.

As we left the Chinese Takeaway to go to the butcher shop, we noticed it had started raining. Karen noticed a real nice rainbow. We could see the entire length of the rainbow. After a short while we noticed that a double rainbow was forming, although the second one only went about halfway. I got a couple pictures of the rainbow.

We got the pork steaks at the butcher and headed back to the car. While in the butcher shop the rain stopped. Nancy was supposed to walk for an hour today and we were walking around for 90 minutes.

Got home and watched some local news on the TV before eating my chicken satay, which turned out not to be all that great.

After eating I opened a bottle of Seifried Nelson 2006 Riesling Ice Wine that I had purchased a couple days ago at the grocery. It was very very good.

We just finished watching the lastest episode of Survivor, the one where Eliza got voted off. I'm sure this was last Thursday's episode in the U.S. since although it is 8:30 PM Thursday here, it is 4:30 AM in Lake Charles.

We are hoping that the weather is good tomorrow since Karen and I plan to go exploring again since Abby will be home most of the time tomorrow.
